In 1984, Tamil Nadu’s TIDCO invested under Rs 10 crore in Titan, a joint venture with the Tata Group. By holding its 27.88% stake for decades, it is now worth nearly Rs 1 lakh crore. The state provided land and licences; Tata brought brand and execution. Today, TIDCO owns more of Titan than Tata Sons itself.
